Tax season can bring dread for many Americans. But for the three families participating in the Star Tribune's "Financial Fix-Ups" series, tax time brings opportunity. All are receiving tax refunds of $1,500 or more, which they'll use to chip away at their debt. The post-holiday bill blues didn't afflict the Fix-Up families; none used credit cards to purchase gifts. Each family has less credit-card debt than when they started six months ago. But it hasn't been easy. All have had setbacks along the way and been surprised by how hard it is to break deeply ingrained habits.
