Get a phone quote after measuring the square footage of each area (length times width). Confirm the bid before the work starts.
Point out problem areas and get a reasonable expectation of cleanability. Pet urine stains are very difficult to remove and deodorize. Worn areas cannot be made to look new. Ask for a written workmanship guarantee that the firm will redo areas that you consider unsatisfactory. Ask about stains or areas that it cannot guarantee.
Ask about repair options. Experienced companies may offer spot dyeing or patching for stubborn stains or burns.
Ask how long the job is expected to take. All but the smallest jobs take two to three hours.
Check references. Contact the Better Business Bureau (651-699-1111 or www.mnd.bbb.org).
Ask about the longevity of the company and more important, the experience of the cleaner who will be cleaning your carpet.
Don't expect heavy pieces of furniture to be moved. Moving furniture is usually included in the bid of reputable companies, but not pieces such as entertainment centers or antique beds.
Inspect and check for spots before paying. Don't pay or let the cleaner go until you have walked around the carpet. Wear clean white socks and step carefully, even if cleaner says you can't walk on it.
