A window on migration

One of the most spectacular spots to observe migrating birds is along Duluth's shoreline.

The bluffs along the edge of Lake Superior create a natural funnel for hawks and eagles trying to avoid flying over that massive body of water. Instead, they soar and glide over the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve.

From mid-August to late November, depending on wind direction and speed, you might see 10,000 or more birds flood the skies in a single day. It's possible to see lots of songbirds, too. And on most days there are demonstrations of bird banding at a nearby banding station. For more information, go to www.hawkridge.org.
