StarTribune.com Traveler: Nearly 2 dozen last-minute flights this weekend with United Airlines

Who'd have thought a week after Thanksgiving that flights to Aspen and Denver would be available for $220 roundtrip this weekend?

Last update: November 28, 2007 - 10:26 AM

Whew. After a long holiday weekend -- not to mention a week filled with rising fuel costs -- you'd expect a lull in low fare travel offers.

But this weekend offers anything but a lull.

United Airlines is going hog wild with last-minute airfare deals out of Minneapolis this weekend, with nearly 20 destinations being offered at relatively inexpensive prices.

Some, obviously, aren't necessarily major tourist destinations. (You don't see many tourism books on Bloomington, Ill., Fort Wayne, Ind. or Springfield, Ill. (all $150 RT).)

But flights to Aspen for $220 roundtrip or Denver for $200 are nothing to sneeze at, particularly as the ski season is in the midst of kicking off.

Details, of course, are the usual drill:

Tickets must be purchased by Friday, Nov. 30 and depart anytime Saturday, Dec. 1. Return on Monday, Dec. 3 or Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Click here for a full listing of the destinations available.

While there, also check United's specials for next week -- there are just as many, if not more.

United isn't the only carrier offering specials this week. This week's specials also include offerings from US Airways to Puerto Vallarta ($222 RT), Manchester, England ($378) and London ($434).

These tickets must be purchased by Monday, Dec. 3, for travel between Nov. 27-Jan. 31.

Those prices to Puerto Vallarta aren't necessarily the cheapest you're going to find out there out of Minneapolis, either.

A check the usual suspects -- the charters -- found round trips for as low as $170 RT via Champion Air. (Check the Worry Free Vactions "Red Hot Deals" for those prices).

Random notes

  • Travelocity is boasting a "low-fare alert" this week with flights to most of the big-ticket warm destinations (Florida, Phoenix, etc.) for in the $200 range.

  • Northwest Airlines is continuing its holiday sale through Dec. 20, with sample fares as low as $112 RT to Chicago.

These reduced fares for holiday travel apply to "Super Off-Peak Days" (with about three asterisks), so be aware up front that you won't likely be traveling at times most consider convenient.

  • Cheap Tickets is offering $50 off qualifying hotels and flights as part of its "48 Hour Sale," Nov. 28-29. Travel on these fares would be good through Jan. 31.

The fine print: "Book a qualifying hotel or flight and hotel package on CheapTickets.com and instantly receive $50-off your purchase through the use of the promotion code, 48HOURSALE ."

    The fine print:

Keep in mind these fare prices change frequently and are "subject to availability," so they may not always be there by the time you search for them.

In most of the weekend deal cases, flights must be purchased by Friday and depart on Saturday, with a return flight on either Monday or Tuesday.

Weekend deals listed here are airfare-only specials (as opposed to deals such as the Northwest Airlines' "packages" that include amenities), as these offer the most flexibility to travelers and advertise specific prices instead of sample fares.
