• Plan ahead and contact the local chapters of the Audubon Society and Sierra Club, which sponsor hikes and bird-watching expeditions.

• Stuart Ball's "The Hikers Guide to Oahu" has trail descriptions and good general information. He has several other books on hiking, camping and backpacking that cover multiple Hawaiian islands.
