This Valentine’s Day, do you want something beyond the usual box of chocolates? That’s as easy as booking a room. (OK, it’ll be a busy week at the inn, so maybe on Thursday you could give the gift of a getaway — scheduled a few weeks out.) There are suitably romantic lodgings around the Midwest that will wow even Valentine cynics. Here are a few of our favorites.

Views of a raging Lake Superior, whirlpool tubs and fireplaces in the room. Now that’s the stuff of romance, brought to you by Duluth’s A.G. Thomson House. Lovebirds can skip breakfast in the dining room and have the multi-course meal delivered to the room (http://thomsonhouse.biz; 1-877-807-8077).

In the extra special (read, pricey) category is Canoe Bay in Chetek, Wis. This is the only Relais & Chateaux in the Midwest (a designation that denotes luxurious environs and culinary excellence). The spacious wood-paneled rooms and cabins sit on a quiet 280-acre site and overlook a small lake and woods crossed with trails. The dining room is stunning — and filled exclusively with two-tops, acknowledgment that the resort caters to couples. Breakfast is delivered to your room (www.canoebay.com; 1-800-568-1995).

Closer to home, tucked away in the Minnesota River Valley town of Henderson, is Henderson House Bed and Breakfast. The inn, consisting of four rooms in an 1875 home, sits on a hill above the town’s quaint historic main street. Warm comforters cover the comfy beds. Big windows frame views of the countryside out back. The barn has been converted to an antiques shop (www.hendersonhouse mnbb.com; 1-507-248-3356).
