Discount airline Spirit announced last week that it's more than doubling its destinations from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It will offer seasonal, daily flights between MSP and Fort Lauderdale and Fort Myers, Fla., from Nov. 8 to April 24. And starting April 25, 2013, Spirit will offer flights to Dallas four days a week, with the service increasing to daily on June 13.

Fall should bring airfare relief to Europe

If you've been thinking about Europe, fall is a great time to go, with cooler weather and festivals. Fares should drop by $300 to $500 to destinations such as Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, London and Madrid. Thanksgiving is also a great time because Europeans don't celebrate it, so you don't have the competition for seats that drives up the cost during Christmas, New Year's and summer.

Treme neighborhood to celebrate 200 years

While TV fans await the third season of HBO's "Treme," the real Fauborg Treme neighborhood just north of the French Quarter is making big plans to celebrate its 200th birthday. One of America's first black neighborhoods, Treme became part of incorporated New Orleans in 1812. Most events, including lectures and home and museum tours, are scheduled for Oct. 17-21, though details are scant now. Check back with treme2012.com.

Tips for not falling prey to a pickpocket

To avoid becoming a victim of pickpockets, especially abroad: Carry a minimal amount of cash and one or two credit cards -- not your whole wallet. (Leave the rest in a security deposit box in the hotel.) Carry your valuables in a secure place, such as a pouch that hangs around your neck and tucks into your shirt, or a money belt hidden under your waistband.
