The June 10 Star Tribune Travel section was all about the Minnesota resorts you like best, based on readers' recommendations. So rich is our state in options, I didn't look east -- until I received an e-mail from a reader with family in Chicago who asked for resort recommendations between here and there.
You can't get more central than the Wisconsin Dells, highlighted in this week's issue (see G1). Many of the celebrated waterpark resorts offer multi-bedroom cabins for large family gatherings. Colleague Nicole Hvidsten recommends Wilderness Resort, which has cabins and condos away from the waterpark hubbub (www.wildernessresort.com).
If you want a family-owned place in the Dells, try Sunset Bay Resort (www.sunsetbayresort.com). Star Tribune reporter Jim Buchta says it is bigger than most traditional family resorts. The resort has a private beach on Lake Delton and lots of great lodging options for families.
Jim also likes the Rivers Edge Resort (www.riversedgeresort.com), which is perched on a bluff overlooking the Wisconsin River. "While it has a swimming pool and a small restaurant, it has log cabins and even a couple freestanding houses that help give it that Up North resort feel," Buchta said.
Among my favorite places heading east is Stout's Island Lodge (www.stoutsisland lodge.com), an out-of-the-way spot with a host of white Adirondack chairs, a swimming dock and quaint cabins. It'll be a quicker drive for you than for your Chicago family, but the trip will be worth it for both. Read a story I wrote about the resort at www.startribune.com/a1417.
