This weekend marks the traditional launch of summer (never mind the 90-degree temps we've already seen) and the summer driving season. It seems like a good time to review ways to improve gas mileage: Get a tune-up before you hit the road. Make sure your tires are at optimal inflation. Don't speed. Minimize what you carry to reduce excess weight.

If you're like me, you know the tips -- and you ignore them. I'm usually too busy prepping for departure and too full of enthusiasm for my destination to worry about car care and other practical issues of the road. And traveling light? Not when I'm lugging a cooler full of food and an extra suitcase filled with beach towels and board games.

But there is one thing I take the time to do: Log on to www.511mn.org.

The website provides maps of road construction throughout the state, and it's only part of the Minnesota Department of Transportation's traveler information system. MnDOT also administers an automated information phone line with 24/7 updates on accidents, road conditions and other pressing details for drivers. All a traveler need do is hand his or her phone over to a passenger (safety first, please), who can dial 511 for the latest scoop on your route.

In most other states, including the Dakotas, Iowa and Wisconsin, 511 is the designated number for traveler information.

I just logged on to learn that Interstate 35 will be reduced to one lane at a few spots north of the Twin Cities this summer. At least now I know to scoot through Wisconsin to my Madeline Island getaway -- or bring a few extra DVDs for my backseat passenger.
