YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

2,800 acres of wilderness across border
In Wisconsin's newest state park, a pristine lake and a handful of nearby ponds host loons, turtles and bass -- but no motorized boats. Hiking trails on gently sloped lands weave among the pools and marshlands and through undisturbed forest groves.
What to do: Canoe and kayak to an island, where an eagle's nest tops an old white pine. Bird watch, keeping an eye out for trumpeter swans.
In season: Come July, beat the bears to the raspberries and blueberries.
Quirk: Because Wisconsin's newest state park is undeveloped and unpublicized, you often hear nothing but birds trill and toads moan. But there's no bathroom, little signage and no boat launch: You'll carry your boat 150 yards to the lake.
Practical matters: Phone, 1-715-483-3747. No camping. The park is 12 miles northeast of St. Croix Falls, Wis.
