Hug (and tap) a tree In a far tastier variation than adopt-a-highway programs, Anderson's Maple Syrup of Cumberland, Wis., has started an Adopt-A-Maple program. Syrup lovers receive a certificate of adoption, e-mailed updates on fall color and spring harvest, and two shipments during the year of Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup from their adopted tree and surrounding sugarbush. Plus, the seventh- and eighth-grade science students in Cumberland are plotting the adopted sugar maples with GPS and uploading tree photos so people can see their actual maple on GoogleEarth. The class also is looking into the possible effects of climate change on syrup production. For every Adopt-A-Maple purchase, a donation goes to plant a tree through AmericanForests.org. Donation options range from $7 to $52. To learn more, visit andersonsmaplesyrup.com.

Down the rabbit hole Alice-mania extends to the kitchen. With Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in theaters, Fishs Eddy offers a line of dinnerware illustrated with John Tenniel's distinctive line drawings (instead of the weird portrayals in Burton's world). The New York store's goofy name came from a small town discovered while scouting the upstate region for antiques -- a search that inspired the owners to specialize in commercial-quality dish and glassware "with plenty of other things that make people smile."
