A chef in the doghouse

The authors who worked with longtime and legendary editor Judith Jones include Julia Child, Lidia Bastianich, James Beard, Marcella Hazan, Edna Lewis, Jacques Pepin and many more. The woman has eaten well. Turns out her dogs have, too. For years, Jones has cooked for her dogs, using the same instincts that she looks for in meals for humans. Now her canine recipes are collected in "Love Me, Feed Me: Sharing With Your Dog the Everyday Good Food You Cook and Enjoy" (Knopf, $24.95). There are recipes for salmon cakes, mushroom risotto, lamb meatballs with yogurt sauce, pork and ham croquettes — even Good Boy (or Girl) Biscotti. Jones explains the nutritional benefits of home-cooked dog food and the latest research on problematic ingredients such as garlic (newly vindicated), ginger (use sparingly) and eggplant (nix the seeds.)

People who don't "get" dogs may roll their eyes, but dog-lovers at ease in the kitchen likely will love this.

Dine to fight climate change

From 5-9 p.m. Thursday, the Birchwood Cafe will donate 30 percent of its proceeds to the Will Steger Foundation's Dine for Climate event series. The series aims to make the connection between climate change and the food system by highlighting how agriculture contributes to climate change, and the impact of food choices.

Diners will have the opportunity to learn about sustainable, locally based food by talking with foundation representatives at the cafe. Reservations are not required for this event. The Will Steger Foundation educates people to engage in solutions to climate change.
