The 12th annual Taste Holiday Cookie Contest officially begins today.

Your cookie recipe could follow in the footsteps of last year's gotta-bake winner, Cappucino Flats, from Dianne Sivald of White Bear Lake. But you'll never know unless you enter.

Your recipe can be an original, or it can be one that you encountered in a newspaper, cookbook, magazine, website or television show and made your own. Also, tell us a story. Share the role the recipe plays in your holiday baking traditions.

The winner receives a $200 gift card to a Twin Cities cooking store. The winner and four finalists will appear here in Taste on Dec. 4 — as well as in the third edition of "The Cookie Book," our bestselling e-cookbook — and will also be invited to bake at the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis on Dec. 6.

When submitting your entry, please include your recipe and story as well as your name, address, daytime phone number and e-mail address.

Enter via e-mail at taste@startribune.com (please write "Taste Holiday Cookie Contest" in the subject field), or by mail to Taste Holiday Cookie Contest, Star Tribune, 425 Portland Av., Mpls., MN 55488.

Don't delay: The deadline is noon on Oct. 24.
