Weekend brunch is when Hell’s Kitchen really goes into overdrive — exceptional hotcakes lightened with lemon and ricotta, poached egg-covered crab-shrimp cakes — but weekday breakfast also does the trick, with basics (eggs any style, a stick-to-your-ribs corned beef hash) supplemented by doughnuts, scones and other a.m. treats from the adjacent Angel Food bakery.

80 S. 9th St., Mpls., 612-332-4700,

The modern-day diner that is the Belmore/New Skyway Lounge is visit-worthy for its scrupulously prepared, reasonably priced renditions of huevos rancheros, eggs Benedict, biscuits and gravy and a glorious banana-topped blintz. Lovely baked goodies, too.

25 N. 4th St., Mpls., 239-339-5990

Breakfast at the counter-service Brothers Deli includes scrambles (don’t miss the pastrami-red pepper combo) and well-stuffed egg sandwiches, plus four $2.49 options, including two pancakes with a slice of bacon, or an egg, hash browns and toast. Weekdays only.
