It was a blind tasting, honest.
Caribou Coffee, host of the Specialty Coffee Association of America's conference this month, took top honors in the Roasters Choice competition with its Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee. If you haven't heard of it, you're hardly alone.
Ethiopian Yirgacheffe is known for its distinctive floral bouquet, said Chad Trewick, senior director of coffee and tea for Caribou. "It's so sweet and fruity that in some respects a customer may be surprised by it," he said, noting that there's a whiff of juniper berries in there, as well.
Yirgacheffe is a washed coffee, in which the coffee beans are soaked for up to 72 hours in fermentation tanks. Experts describe beans treated with this "wet" method as having a higher acidity, a cleaner winelike or floral flavor, and more body than beans processed by the dry method.
Other winners in the Roasters Choice were Sweet Maria's of Oakland, Calif., and the Roasterie of Kansas City.
