Lower-cal Greek yogurt We already had Dannon's Oikos Greek (strained) yogurt in both nonfat (120-calorie) and "traditional" (full-fat, 160-calorie) versions, both sweetened with sugar and fructose. Now they've added Light & Fit nonfat Greek yogurt, sweetened with fructose, sucralose and acesulfame potassium, so it contains 80 calories. But, possibly protecting the Oikos brand, this artificially sweetened Greek yogurt isn't Oikos Light & Fit; it's Dannon Light & Fit.

More or less simultaneously, or so it seemed to Mr. Tidbit, Yoplait has a new Greek version with 100 calories; it's sweetened with sugar, sucralose and acesulfame potassium.

Note: Much Greek yogurt (although not Yoplait's first entry) comes in 5.3-ounce tubs instead of the more familiar 6-ouncers, so for comparison the 100, 120 and 160 calorie figures should be increased by 13 percent, to 113, 136 and 181.

Simply simple Yoplait is taking no chances on the loyalty of consumers of ... what should it be called? Regular yogurt? Traditional yogurt? The yogurt whose quality is, mercifully, not strained? Anyway, permitting our yogurt purchases to vault us onto today's other bandwagon, Yoplait now offers Simplait ("just 6 simple ingredients").

In the strawberry version, those ingredients are: cultured pasteurized Grade A milk, strawberries, sugar, cornstarch, vegetable juice (for coloring) and natural flavor. (That's full-fat milk, so Simplait's 6-ounce tub contains 7 grams of fat and 200 calories.)

Original (1.5 grams of fat, 170 calories) strawberry Yoplait consists of: cultured pasteurized Grade A low-fat milk, sugar, strawberries, modified cornstarch, high-fructose corn syrup, nonfat milk, kosher gelatin, citric acid, tricalcium phosphate, natural flavor, pectin, carmine (for coloring), vitamin A acetate and vitamin D3.

At one store, where regular Yoplait is 72 cents, Simplait costs 94 cents.

Fruitier Also new from Yoplait is Fruplait, a line of yogurt that Mr. Tidbit can actually detect is different from regular Yoplait. According to the box (of four 4-ounce tubs) Fruplait contains "2X the fruit of the leading yogurt" -- and you can see it, and it isn't all on the bottom! It's $3.29 at the same store, 70 percent more per ounce than Original Yoplait.
