Taste: Kids who cook

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? That's child's play. Some kids have moved on to quesadillas, spanokopita and muffins -- including six winning cooks, who were among the more than 100 who responded to our "Kids Who Cook" essay contest in November.

Recipes? Who needs them? One of the cooks, Chris Betten, invents his own.

Rico Rodriguez likes to make pizza and smoothies and hopes to learn to cook Mexican food. Rachel Haim fancies muffins and admits what most grown-ups don't -- that she likes to dip her finger in the batter for a taste.

It's all Greek to Josh Parisian, who has taken cooking classes to enhance his skills and makes baklava and spanokopita. Alicia Dodge enjoys making zucchini bread and, as with many kids her age, she likes to crack the eggs.

Versatility is key in the kitchen of Anh-Ton Dang. He likes to prepare Vietnamese fried rice because he can put a variety of ingredients in it.

Find out what inspires these cooks as you read their winning essays, make their favorite recipes and discover more about our first-place winner, Chris Betten.
