Q Finding stylish, affordable, age-appropriate clothes is a real chore now that my legs are not that great anymore. Are those lightweight, ankle-length summer dresses suitable for a woman who is closer to 60 than 50? If not, what do I wear to look nicely put-together in the heat?

A Those breezy maxi dresses are wonderfully cool and comfortable, and, better yet, suitable for woman of any age. However, a length that stops a little above the ankle is best. A dress that's too long can look dowdy. You may find some of the styles available are a little bare on top, but that's what shrugs and lightweight cardigans are for.

Other options for covering your legs while keeping cool and looking chic include longer gathered or tiered skirts with simple fitted tops, or capri pants paired with a loose tunic or a tank top or camisole under a casual jacket.

For more ideas, check out the styles in stores such as Chico's and Coldwater Creek, which cater to women in their prime.
