Orange is out. Purple is in.

Maybe it's the longer nights, our tendency to wear darker clothes this time of year or the return of '90s grunge fashion, but once-hot punchy orange-red lipstick has been replaced by deep purple hues.

The decidedly deeper and darker lips have been spotted on Lorde, Rihanna and Carrie Underwood.

"This season [the dark lip] is much more fresh and modern," Nars International's lead makeup stylist, Uzo, recently told the Chicago Tribune. "Formulas are not as matte. They are creamier and glossier, which changes the look and dimension."

Uzo offered these tips:

• For a fair complexion, choose a color with cool undertones.

• A medium complexion is a bit more versatile when it comes to this trend. Uzo said cool, deep colors and shades with red undertones work.

• For dark skin, warmer undertones work well. Think warm berries that are not quite as deep as a dark purple but have some red tones.
