David and Kirsten Gebel

Wedding date: Aug. 4, 2013.

Venue: Aria, Minneapolis.

Describe your wedding style: "We met while we were living in Chicago. We've always enjoyed city life and are drawn to raw spaces with exposed brick, unperfected edges and mix-and-match interiors. I think you could describe our wedding as 'urban chic' with a lot of DIY."

Groom's attire: Custom suit by J. Hilburn, Toms shoes and socks from Jack Threads. Tie clip from Fired Up Ladies Hammer on Etsy.

Bride's attire: Wedding dress is Blush by Hayley Paige from Che Bella in St. Paul. Earrings and hair jewelry from Che Bella. Toms purple ballet flats.

What was your favorite style element of the day? "The space at Aria speaks for itself — it's grand, elegant, contemporary, unique and has a lot of quirk. We really didn't want to do anything over the top that would take away from the space."

Why was incorporating your style into your wedding important? "I grew up in a home where yards of fabric and yarn overflowed from every closet in the house and my mom made every Halloween costume and prom dress. She taught me how to sew when I was 8 or 9 and gave me my first sewing machine a couple years ago. When I saw Aria, my first thought was soft fabrics draped against the brick, and we went from there with our decor."

Why did you DIY? "I felt that putting a lot of effort into making the details reflect our style would make the day feel that much more genuinely 'us.' I never even thought about hiring someone to create my vision — I wanted to make everything: spray painting hundreds of bottles (420!); spending a day at Home Depot to cut wood for the table numbers; finding window panes at my favorite furniture resale shop in Chicago, and digging through S.R. Harris fabrics in Minneapolis to cut into squares and sew together for a textured backdrop."

What was your something borrowed, old and blue? "I did the 'something old' by pinning one of my grandmother's earrings to my dress."
