Taking 'Project' to a real runway

Last update: February 27, 2008

NEW YORK - Friday morning at the Bryant Park tents, fall fashions took a backseat to television for the filming of the "Project Runway" finale.

All five of the remaining designers showed collections, though presumably, only three are actually finalists. Highlights included a vertically ruffled dress by Christian Siriano, bright sportswear and gowns by Rami Kashou and dramatic coats by Jillian Lewis.

Along with the bevy of contestants was Season 3 competitor and Minneapolis resident Katherine Gerdes (www.katherinegerdes.com). "Overall, Rami was my favorite. It was very innovative, but wearable," Gerdes said. Despite her preference, she suspects Christian Siriano might win. "He's obviously a prodigy -- he's 21 and he can do that."

That's up to judges Michael Kors, Nina Garcia, Heidi Klum, and guest judge Victoria Beckham, who wore orange and sat in the front row.

Switching to fall 2008, Calvin Klein's show was the most sophisticated and clean. In a dark palette of black, navy and gray, the label's designer Francisco's pleats were minimalist and stunning, especially all over a strapless cocktail dress. Blazers and pencil skirts were quite modern, during a season that has a rather retro feel.
