Got a question about your tie? Robert Valdes-Rodriguez has the answer. The owner and designer of RVR neckwear and author of "Men: 10 Essential Skills" will be meeting with customers at Hubert White on Thursday (10 a.m. to 7 p.m., IDS Center, 747 Nicollet Mall, Mpls., 612-339-9200).
Q What ties are in style?
A There is a lot of talk in the industry about whether narrow ties (2 to 2¾ inches) will play a more important role. My opinion is that narrow ties will maintain a narrow following. The standard (3¼- to 3¾-inch) tie widths will continue to represent the largest percentage of market share.
Q What is your approach for picking ties, shirts and suits?
A Complete -- don't compete -- when deciding what to wear and what colors to choose.
Q What's your recommendation for a power tie?
A Most shades of purple. People refer to purple as "the new navy."
Q What's the biggest sartorial mistake men make?
A Having a tie and pocket square in the exact, same design and color. Another mistake is trying too hard by creating a busy ensemble with too many wild colors while combining stripes and plaids. My advice is to keep it simple and set yourself apart with a dash of color and accessory accents rather than a tsunami.
Q How often do you wear ties?
A I wear a tie five or six days a week. Seriously, it's all about comfort and confidence. Ties can be worn in the dressiest and most casual of occasions.
