Most museums are getting more interactive, but the Minneapolis Institute of Arts took the concept to new heights -- in the form of up-dos -- Thursday evening.

For its once-a-month free event in the lobby, the MIA brought in stylists from nearby Mezzanine Salon to whip together hairstyles paying homage to six artworks on display in its galleries. As they listened to live music by noise band Marijuana Deathsquads, partygoers watched the tresses of models morph into likenesses of 18th-century portrait subjects, a bust by Bernini and wooden African masks.

Musician Christy Hunt of Pink Mink, one of the models, was given the 18th-century French noblewoman treatment with more than 40 tightly massed curls atop her head. Asked if she planned to keep the elaborately beribboned blonde sculpture intact for awhile, she said, "I'd really like to, but I work in a hot yoga studio, so it's probably not going to work."
