Betcha didn't know that ...

• Fabled moonshiner Pig's Eye Parrant has a modern-day beer named after him, but by all accounts never brewed it. He did make more than his share of moonshine.

• The Minneapolis-based Gluek's brewery invented malt liquor in the 1940s.

• One of the few New Ulm buildings that wasn't burned to the ground during the Dakota War in the 1860s was the August Schell brewery.

• Susannah Burkhard Kimmick Aiple Tepass came by her outsized name honestly: Her three husbands ran the same Stillwater brewery in the 19th century -- except during the stretches between their deaths and her subsequent remarriages, when she ran the business.

• Peter Schroeder's Northern Pacific Brewery in Perham made a beer that drew such acclaim he labeled it "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Jealous." Schlitz sued -- and won.

• A batch of cone-top, olive-drab Grain Belt cans that were used in World War II recently were found in an attic in Greece.
