I felt a little left out Sunday night when Beyonce and Rihanna and the rest of the gang at the Grammys put on their 3D glasses to watch "Earth Song" during the Michael Jackson tribute. There I was, sitting in my basement. I had my big screen, my remote, my beverage of choice.
But my eyes were naked. And that meant I was seeing only a flat imitation of what the glasses-wearing glitterati were seeing. Those nature scenes were pretty, flashing behind Celine and Usher and Carrie Underwood while they sang. But the 3D specs must have elevated them into something spectacular. (Apparently Target was handing out free 3D glasses in advance of the show, but I didn't get the memo.)
I'm hearing that this Sunday's Super Bowl could be a similarly frustrating viewing experience. Many of the commercials -- the only thing worth watching, now that the Vikings won't be on the field -- will be in 3D.
This creates a dilemma if I invite people over to watch the game. I thought all I'd need was some beer and a good dip recipe. But no. Apparently, being a proper hostess in the digital era means passing out the 3D glasses as well.
There's going to be a lot more 3D TV coming to our screens in 2010. EPSN plans to roll out the first official 3D sports network this June. And one in four consumers say they plan to buy a 3D TV within the next three years, according to a survey by the Consumer Electronics Association. What do you think of 3D TV? Cool? Or over-hyped? And if you wore 3D glasses to watch the Grammys, what did I miss?
