Restoration Hardware's new Artisan Collection, a mix of antique reproductions and designs based on the CEO's own furnishings, evokes handcrafting from a previous era.
The company says the collection "reappropriates unexpected fixtures and unique influences into the modern home with sophistication and nostalgic charm." Whatever the description, there is no denying the appeal of some of these items -- heavy on the wood, iron, gears and architectural elements. The company's chief executive, Gary Friedman, is a fan of antiques; the 75-piece collection reflects his sensibilities, constructed using traditional artisan techniques. From industrial tool chest to vintage factory cart, the collection, with several lighting pieces, oozes vintage charm. Prices range from $35 for French linen pillow covers to almost $4,000 for the Mayfair Trunk Secretary, a towering leather trunk that opens to a portable office. Two standouts: The Flatiron Desk, $995. The solid steel frame, with caster wheels, holds a reclaimed elm top, made from antique doors. The hardwood TV Easel, $995, is height-adustable and hides wires and cords; it holds a television (or other items) up to 60 inches wide. Its antique finish is hand-applied. Available at the Galleria in Edina, 791 Grand Av. in St. Paul and www.restorationhardware.com.
