Q Can I put a CFL bulb in a totally enclosed fixture such as a ceiling light?
A It depends. Compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs generally can be used in enclosed fixtures that are not recessed into the surface.
Totally enclosed recessed fixtures (for example, a ceiling can light with a cover over the bulb) get too hot when fitted with a compact fluorescent bulb.
Be aware, however, that CFL quality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. You might not have the same results with any two bulbs from different makers. Generally speaking, higher-priced bulbs tend to be of better quality.
Centipede patrolQ We have recently built a bedroom and bathroom in our basement for our daughter. She is anxious about the centipedes she has found in these rooms. We have tried Raid, but they appear again quickly. Any suggestions?
A Centipedes are arthropods with flat bodies and many long legs, and they move very fast.
Fortunately, they are only an annoyance and are harmless to people. It's typical to see a few in your home, especially during the spring and summer. The good news is that their numbers naturally go down as the weather gets colder and drier.
For the centipedes you see, physically kill them (with a rolled up newspaper or shoe, for example). Sticky traps (like a Roach Motel) might also help capture a few.
Centipedes prefer a damp environment, so using a fan or dehumidifier to keep humidity low is helpful (although this is probably less of an issue during fall and winter).
An insecticide should not be necessary. If you do decide to spray, use the product carefully and judiciously, applying only in areas where you see centipedes most frequently.
During warm weather, it is also worth taking a look around your home's exterior. Centipedes will be more common in areas where there is mulch, leaves and other such material. Remove plant debris that is close to the foundation and seal any obvious cracks or spaces around the foundation to help keep out centipedes.
