Lego sculptures at the Arboretum
Here's a new way to connect with nature. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum opens a new exhibit, "Nature Connects: Art With Lego Bricks," on Friday, featuring 13 displays of large nature-inspired sculptures made from tiny plastic Lego bricks.
The sculptures, which include a giant snapping turtle, a deer family and a monarch butterfly on a milkweed plant, are the work of artist Sean Kenney of New York City, one of just a few "Lego-certified professionals" worldwide. His creations have toured botanical gardens, zoos and arboreta across North America.
The exhibit will include "Lego Builds," hands-on activity sessions that incorporate science and engineering principles. These sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 16 and 30, June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25 and Aug. 8 and 22.
The Lego sculpture exhibit runs through Aug. 30.
Spring daffodil show
Daffodils come in more than just yellow; the sunny spring flower grows in combinations of white, yellow, pink, orange and almost red. You can see daffodils in all their varied splendor at the Daffodil Society of Minnesota's spring show May 16-17 at Bachman's, where more than 600 daffodil blooms will be on display. This is a judged competitive show of cut blooms. Daffodil photography also will be displayed. The show is open to the public from noon to 6 p.m. May 16 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 17 at Bachman's, 6010 Lyndale Av. S., Mpls.
