You've always been able to pick up a chili dog and, say, a bottle of hot sauce, some jewelry cleaner or a ShamWow at the Minneapolis Home + Garden Show. This year, the show aims to be more of a shopping destination.

In addition to a flower market selling fresh-cut flowers and custom floral displays, the spring show will feature a weekend-only boutique. More than 20 artisans will be selling home accessories, antiques, jewelry and more.

For the run of the show, there also will be a pop-up shop of sorts, featuring the work of Carter Averbeck. The local designer and owner of Omforme (Norwegian for "to transform") Design, will be offering one-of-a-kind, repurposed furnishings, which he describes as modern, surprising and "anything but Shabby Chic." (Averbeck will also take the Lifestyle Stage on Friday and Sunday to demonstrate how to pick and repurpose old furniture to give it new life.)

If you're a real bargain hunter, hang on until the end of the show for the plant sale. Starting at 5 p.m. on Sunday, most of the plants from the nine display gardens will be sold off. The gardens — lush, fresh and fragrant — are one of the lures of the show, which is always at a time when even the hardiest of Minnesotans are getting winter weary. Taking home a little piece of spring isn't such a bad idea. □
