Crazy for color

Here are some of Mekea Duffy's tips for adding splashes of color and patterns throughout your home:

• An easy way to introduce color is in accessories, such as lamps, pillows, throws, boxes and vases.

• A neutral background with a black, navy or dark gray anchor is a great foundation for color play.

• You can use up to four color combinations within a room if they are repeated throughout the space. "Any variety of orange is a good pop of color," she said.

• Mix up patterns and texture — but be sure large- and small-scale patterns are balanced within a room.

• Don't be afraid to use the same color in different tones within the same room.

• Try mixing warm and cool tones, for example, reds/oranges with blues/greens.
