Wild Ones tour

Bonnie Harper-Lore, a naturalist and educator, will lead the Wild Ones’ “Crossing Biomes” free two-part walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday through the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve and the Helen Allison Savanna. The Cedar Creek tour begins with a prairie and ends in a Northern tamarack bog. In between, you can explore native upland forests, lowland swamps and meadows that are home to many Minnesota native plant communities. The second part of the walk is in the Helen Allison Savanna, an 80-acre tract of sand savanna owned by the Nature Conservancy and administered by the Minnesota DNR as a Scientific and Natural Area. Native curb appeal

Learn how to fill your city plots with low-maintenance, easy-to-grow native plants at a free talk on “Native Plants for the Urban Garden,” 11 a.m. Saturday, Dharma Field Zen Center, 3118 W. 49th St., Minneapolis. There will also be native plant information booths, plant sales and samplings of iced tea and treats made from native plants from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For information, go to www.wild­onestwincities.org.

 

An apple a day

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s AppleHouse, which is in a large rustic shed, is selling a variety of freshly picked fruits, including many University of Minnesota introductions. Apple inventory changes throughout the season, so call the AppleHouse Hotline at 952-443-1409. The AppleHouse also offers other produce such as watermelon, cucumber, zucchini, corn, beans, onion, eggplant, peppers and potatoes. The shelves are also filled with University of Minnesota meats, cheeses and ice cream, plus locally made fudge, maple syrup, baked goods and jams. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Oct. 31. It’s located about 1½ miles west of the arboretum entrance on Hwy. 5 and Rolling Acres Road. Go to www.arboretum.umn.edu.
