Designs for a steel-and-hemp chair and another made from recycled materials have won the annual Minnesota College of Art and Design's annual seating contest. Matt Borchert's "Bask Chair" and Mac Plumstead's "Seymour" tied, besting 13 other entries for a $1,500 scholarship (they'll each get their own) and a chance to have the chairs included in Room & Board's 2009 collection if actual models of the winners prove viable.
The furniture store's employees judged the entries. A spokeswoman said the designers, both Minnesota natives, are working with Minnesota fabricators Bell Manufacturing and Loll Designs, each of which will produce one of the chairs. She said both use recycled steel and that the Seymour is designed to also use either recycled plastic or recycled paper; the Bask's specification for organic hemp is being explored.
