Chapinwood is a five-bedroom, five-bathroom lakeside compound inspired by the great log and stone Adirondack camps of Maine, Vermont and upstate New York.
With more than 10,000 square feet, this lodgey northwestern Wisconsin version is roughly four times the size of the average new home today. The main building (outbuildings include a studio, sauna, boathouse and a large heated storage building with indoor and outdoor dog kennels) began as a 1940s log cabin, but has since been expanded in all directions. One wing has an ultra-private master suite with its own sundeck fireplace, seating area and spa-like bathroom; there's also a guest wing. Outdoorsy types have their own space: A sport room for fishing gear and hunting equipment includes a gun safe.
Other not-so-rustic goodies:
• Custom-made windows manufactured to mimic the original ones. There are copper screens, too.
• Antler chandeliers and oil-rubbed bronze hardware.
• Australian cypress floors.
• Custom-made furnishings that can be sold with the house.
• A high-tech security system that senses heat, moisture and smoke.
The compound is within a 25-acre forest (surrounded by the Chequamegon National Forest) and has 860 feet of sandy Diamond Lake shoreline.
