Looking for unique artwork for an empty wall, shelf or niche? Next weekend brings an art bonanza to Minneapolis with three simultaneous art fairs. The Uptown Art Fair, largest in the state and one of the largest in the nation, starts its three-day run Friday. In addition to art created by more than 350 fine artists from around the world, the fair includes nonstop entertainment and food booths. Located at the intersection of Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue S. and along "The Mall," the fair runs noon-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. next Sunday. For more information, visit www.uptownartfair.com.
The Powderhorn Art Fair (www.powderhornartfair .com), 35th Street and 15th Avenue S., and the Loring Park Art Festival (www.loringparkart festival.com), Oak Grove Street and Hennepin Avenue S., also will be underway Saturday (10 a.m.-6 p.m.) and next Sunday (10 a.m.-5 p.m.). Both will feature live music, children's activities and food, as well as the juried work of many regional and national artists.
You can make it a triple, visiting all three fairs by bus and avoiding parking and traffic hassles. To download a free Metro Transit Art Fair pass and see bus routes, go to www.metrotransit.org/artpass.
KIM PALMERBook celebrates Moroccan style
Marrakesh transplant and blogger Maryam Montague shares her love of Moroccan architecture and decorating in her first book, "Marrakesh by Design."
Montague is the creator of the blog "My Marrakesh," which she created to chronicle the efforts of her and her husband to build a home there.
In the book, she introduces readers to the architecture of Morocco and explains the historical, religious and practical forces that influenced its distinctive features. She takes readers inside homes, gardens, courtyards and other spaces, each with its own style but all infused with Moroccan character.
She also gives readers specific ideas for incorporating the vivid colors, lively patterns and handmade quality into their own homes.
"Marrakesh by Design" is published by Artisan Books and sells for $29.95 in hardcover.
