Oddly enough, the Winter Carnival Orchid Show is a great escape -- from winter. The popular show, held in the tropical Marjorie McNeely Conservatory at Como Park, features hundreds of exotic, brightly colored orchids groomed and grown by individual orchid enthusiasts and commercial growers. In addition, orchids from the conservatory's collection -- many of which aren't generally displayed -- will be on view. If you're inspired by what you see, you can buy an orchid or two from one of the regional vendors who sell plants and supplies, including potting mediums, fertilizer and care manuals.

The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 12 and under. For more information, go to www.comozooconservatory.org.

Ski the arb The perennials might be waiting out winter under a thick layer of snow, but the cross-country trails at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum are groomed and ready to go.

The arb has 8.5 miles of ski trails and 1.25 miles of snowshoe trails, which wind through the native woods and wetland areas and out into the tree collections. For an après-ski treat, you can grab a cup of hot chocolate or stay for a meal.

The arb, in Chanhassen, is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset. Admission is $7 for adults; ages 15 and under are free. For more information, call 952-443-1400.
