Q How can I keep squirrels from digging my newly planted tulip bulbs?
Q How can I keep squirrels from digging my newly planted tulip bulbs?
A With bulbs already in the ground, try treating the area with a commercial squirrel repellent. When you plant bulbs, lay wire mesh, such as chicken wire, on top of the bed. The squirrels can't dig through the mesh, and the flowers will grow neatly through the holes. Squirrels can be led to your bulbs by the clues you leave behind: soft, freshly disturbed soil (consider mulch) and bits of papery bulb tunics, or bulb-scented bits from the bags. Be fastidious and clean up all evidence of your planting.

Help for dull Formica
Q Is there a way to clean and restore an old Formica countertop and restore its shine?
A Formica is just one brand name for plastic laminate surface. In all cases, however, it's wise to be careful what you use to clean them. Antibacterial spray cleaners, for example, can leave the surface blotchy and dull. Some stores that sell Formica and other laminate countertops also sell cleaning and renewal products that may improve the look of yours.
Otherwise, most surface stains can be removed with Barkeeper's Friend, available at hardware stores and supermarkets. Make a paste by mixing Barkeeper's Friend with water. Put it on a paper towel and rub the area. Rinse with water.
Try renewing the shine on countertops with a rubbing or polishing compound available at automotive stores. Remember, if the countertop has a matte finish, there is nothing you can do to make it shiny.
In the future, to reduce staining, lightly polish the plastic laminate with a polish containing silicone. Such polishes often are available at stores that sell plastic laminate countertops.
