YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES

Q What are those small, flashing white lights on a traffic signal pole?
Q What are those small, flashing white lights on a traffic signal pole?
A The white light at some traffic signals is an Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) indicator. When it is on, it means an emergency vehicle is in the area and has preempted the traffic signal, turning the light green so the emergency vehicle can pass safely and quickly through the intersection. In some locations the white light can mean that the railroad has preempted the traffic signal.
If the light is on but not flashing, it means that the signal is being preempted and will provide a green for that direction. If the light is flashing, the signal will give a green to traffic in the other direction.

Closing rooms
Q I have a section of the house that I use only for guests. I would like to reduce the temperature there to reduce heating costs. Is there a recommended temperature to ensure no damage to the wood furniture or structure of the house?
A Yes, 55 degrees. However, when reducing the heat to parts of your house:
Be careful not to close off too many vents. It could interfere with the furnace's operation. Don't close off more than 15 percent of your home's total square footage.
Closing off areas isn't recommended in some situations, such as in an area where a heat pump is located. Check with the manufacturer or installer of your heating system.
Shutting off heat to rooms and closing the doors can create conditions for mold. Condensation or even frost can form in some areas, including inside closets and in corners. That can lead to mold and mildew. Leave doors ajar to keep a minimal amount of air circulating, and check conditions in the room periodically.
