Stocking story: Leslie Thomson

Last update: December 21, 2006 - 6:20 AM

My paternal grandmother, Georgia, was highly skilled at sewing and embroidery. When her seven grandchildren were small, she made each of us a felt stocking with sequined Christmas trees, stars, angels and our name spelled out in glittering beads. The sequins and beads are not as bright they used to be, but each Christmas I am still amazed to look at it and remember past Christmas mornings when the stocking would be filled with small presents and treats wrapped in tissue. And remembering the one Christmas when it was filled with charcoal briquettes and lemons because my brother, sister and I had snuck around the house and found our Christmas presents early. My grandmother passed away a few years before I married my husband Steve. For our first Christmas I wanted a stocking for him. Using mine as inspiration, I spent many nights sewing on little beads and sequins with a greater appreciation for the love and work that went into each of our stockings.
