ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER
Transmission
A bacterial infection transmitted by wood ticks.
Symptoms
Can cause fever, malaise, headache, myalgia, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and a rash.
Treatment
The disease can be treated with tetracycline (an antibiotic). If you suspect an infection, seek treatment from an infectious disease specialist.
POWASSAN
Transmission
A rare virus that can be carried by deer ticks.
Symptoms
Affects the central nervous system, causing swelling on the brain (encephalitis) or meningitis. Symptoms can include fever, rash, headache, vomiting, weakness, confusion, loss of coordination, speech difficulties and memory loss.
Treatment
Seek medical care if symptoms occur after outdoor activities.
PREVENTION
Use repellents with DEET and take precautions in wooded areas (wear long pants, check for ticks).
