Twin to twin transfusion syndrome

Last update: October 24, 2008 - 9:22 PM

What it is: One twin receives too little blood through the shared blood vessels of their placenta, the other too much.

When it occurs: In 40 to 50 sets of twins in Minnesota each year, and in 10 to 15 percent of all identical-twin pregnancies.

The breakthrough: Abnormal blood vessels are cauterized, allowing the blood flow to even out.
