ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota health officials say tests confirm an amoeba infection caused the rare illness that killed a 9-year-old boy this month.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted the testing and reported the findings Monday to the Minnesota Department of Health.
State health officials had suspected the amoeba infection. CDC tests confirmed it.
Jack Ariola Erenberg recently swam in Lily Lake in Stillwater. Health officials say that that's where the child likely contracted the rare form of meningitis that caused his death
Minnesota's only previously confirmed case was in August 2010. That 7-year-old child also swam in Lily Lake.
Lily Lake remains closed for now.
