Clif Bar & Co. of Berkeley, Calif., has a novel new item in its line of nutrition products: hot cocoa designed for fitness fanatics.
The powder-mix packets, which cost $1.69 each, incorporate amino acids, antioxidants, electrolytes, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and green tea to hydrate the body and replenish muscles.
Just add 8 ounces of hot water, stir and you have a steaming cup ready to drink and do its stuff.
In my taste test, the mix seemed semisweet and fine for sipping after a ski or wintertime trail run. Bonus: Clif cites the mix as containing 87 percent organic ingredients, all originating from non-GMO (genetically modified organism) sources.
Each packet has 17 grams of sugar and 190 milligrams of sodium. Fiber, fat, potassium and 23 grams of carbohydrates round out the formula.
CLIF SHOT Hot Electrolyte packets weigh about 1.5 ounces apiece, and are sealed tight for transport in a pocket or backpack. For wintertime treks, throw in a Thermos of hot water, bring your Clif powder and you'll have an ad hoc hot drink with nutritional side benefits that are easy to swallow.
