Danny Kristo, a sophomore University of North Dakota hockey player and former standout from Eden Prairie, suffered frostbite while walking near campus Sunday night in Grand Forks, leaving his return to action uncertain.

"We have been in close contact with Danny's family," Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol said in a written statement. "My concern is with Danny's health and his full recovery."

The 20-year-old forward is being treated at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

The temperature of minus-11 degrees that night in Grand Forks was even cold by North Dakota standards. The windchill made the temperature feel like minus-33. It takes only minutes for frostbite to occur in those conditions.

Hakstol said that he and the school, out of respect for the Kristo family's privacy, will not explain any more about Kristo's condition or any details about what happened Sunday evening.Kristo is sixth on the team in points through 29 games, with five goals and 17 assists.

In his first season with the Sioux last year, Kristo was named the WCHA Rookie of the Year. He led all league rookies in points (36), points per game (0.88), goals (15) and power-play points (20).

In the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by Montreal in the second round (56th overall).
