THE GEAR JUNKIE UNBREAKABLE SHADES
You can tie these sunglasses in a knot. They won't break. They'll spring back into shape, unfolding bow to nosepiece undamaged and like new. That was the claim put forth by New York City-based Numa Tactical (www.numatactical.com), a company that incorporates a top-secret flexible fiber material in the manufacture of its frames.
The story goes that the founder of Numa Tactical became fed up after busting too much eyewear while outdoors and in the field. So he sought out a new flexible but sturdy fiber material that would rebound from abuse, surviving even the occasional butt-sitting incident.
The result is a line of four sunglasses models, which sell for $99 and up. They have interchangeable polycarbonate lenses, polarized and non, in orange-, tan- and clear-lens options.
I tested out the fold-'em-up guarantee, and, lo, the glasses bent and flexed yet showed little sign of stress. I'd not make a habit of tying my eyewear in knots, but for general sports, fitness and outdoor use, these frames have the potential to hold up like no others.
