JOHN CLAYTON NIENSTEDT

Vital statistics: Born March 18, 1947, in Detroit. Parents were John and Elizabeth Nienstedt.

Education: Graduated in 1969 from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit. Did graduate study at Pontifical Institute of St. Alphonsus in Rome. Received doctorate in sacred theology in 1985.

Career: Ordained in 1974. Appointed auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Detroit in 1996. Named bishop of the Diocese of New Ulm in 2001. Became archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on May 2.

Hobbies: Cooking and skiing.

What you might be surprised to learn: Doesn't like meetings. He takes great pride in pointing out that he's "a pastor, not a CEO."
