The loss of cheap parking for Vikings games near the Dome

Posted by: John Ewoldt Updated: August 21, 2012 - 7:57 AM

You can pay $30 to park in lots near the Metrodome for pre-season games, but a few cheapskates knew of much cheaper parking along S. 3rd St. between 10th and 12th Avenues, along the Valspar Paint buildings.

That's in the past now. On Friday, the city changed the cheap meters from 25 cents an hour to $3 an hour (10 hour maximum). On the positive side, it's still cheaper than paying $30 to park in a lot (even more than $30 for a high profile game). Also, the coin meters have been replaced by the smart meters that take Visa and Mastercard. Now you won't have to worry about running out of quarters to feed the meter.

Ray Crump Jr. from Dome Souvenirs Plus knows the parking situation in the area. He sent this map that details the cheapest parking zones are in the downtown, Uptown and Cedar Riverside areas. Note, however, that the pink zones (25 cents an hour) near the Dome on 3rd St. are not a quarter an hour as indicated on the map during special events such as Vikings games. The good news? If you're parking in the area during a non-special-event time, the price is still a quarter per hour. Apparently, the city waves a wand to jack up the price when Vikings fans are near and waves it again when they're gone.

Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for alternate parking areas for Dome patrons who aren't willing to pay $30 or more to park. Share if you know of any.

Where's the best selection of a Favre purple jersey today?

Posted by: John Ewoldt Updated: September 21, 2009 - 4:17 PM

Gotta have a Favre jersey for the home opener Sunday? If you want the authentic replica ($80), Dome Souvenirs just got in a new shipment that probably won't sell out before Sunday. Here's a link to the selection or call 612-375-9707. They have a wide variety in sizers from toddlers to adult. The Vikings Locker Room at Mall of America also had some in stock today, Sept. 21, also for $80.

Want to spend less? Kohl's version isn't an authentic replica ($60, on sale for $45) but it's good quality. had some in stock earlier today.

Target, which sells a jersey for $30, expects a shipment "in the very near future," a spokesman said, but check the downtown Minneapolis store first. The downtown store gets first dibs, I guess.

Why pay $90 for a Favre jersey when you pay $30?

Posted by: John Ewoldt Updated: August 26, 2009 - 2:02 PM

The licensed replica Favre jerseys with screen-printed lettering are sold out in purple at Dome Souvenirs Plus in Minneapolis, but the white is still available for $80, about 10 bucks less than at the Dome. The $80 ones have the NFL shield on them, unlike the cheaper $30 jerseys found at Wal-Mart or Target.

What else do you get for the extra bucks besides the shield? Heavier material and stretchy side vents. Okay, I'm more of a cheapskate than a Favre fan, but if I had to buy his jersey, I'd see how many bullets he throws before investing the extra $60.

Any other good deals on (in-stock) Favre jerseys out there I missed?
