Ditch the gadgets and enjoy the view

Even when on vacation, surrounded by gorgeous landscapes, the pull of the gadget is strong.

Smartphones that ping and buzz remind you that you could be missing out on something oh-so-important, like the latest dispute over the ownership of monkey selfies. Talk to the people you're traveling with? Sure, as soon as you tweet about being in the car with them.

To stop the madness and encourage people to actually see and enjoy what's around them, New Forest National Park in Britain is offering free lockers for gadgets.

The park website says:

"Inspired to take a proper family break away from distractions of the modern world?

Then ask your child or grown up to make a promise to swap screen time for family time surrounded by the New Forest National Park. Click on the link on the right to download and print the promise vouchers to leave your car keys, mobiles and computers games at the Tech Creche."

If you need more help unplugging (because Minnesota is a long way from the Tech Creche), consider these tips from Wall Street Journal tech columnist Joanna Stern. She turned to timers and parental control apps to give herself a tech timeout.

Now get off the Internet and go outside.
