Winter getaways within reach

From the Cribsheet in-box, Emily G.  has this inquiry:

We are planning a mid-winter road trip, along the lines of a distance like Duluth or Eau Claire. We'd love to find a hotel that has a family-friendly pool. We don't need the full-on waterpark hotel (our kids just turned 2 and 4), but a hotel pool that is zero-depth and/or has other young-kid-friendly features would be great. We've stayed at a hotel in Winona that has a zero-depth pool with animal slides and climbing sculptures ... I just can't seem to find anything like it at other destinations within road-trip range!

I'd love to hear some ideas too. Readers, as always, turning  it over to you for advice and suggestions.
