In Tuesday's column called "Wine: Wait for a Sale or Buy from a Discounter?" I compared prices on seven commonly-found brand name wines at seven stores. If you're reading online, check out the price comparison chart under "Document: Wine Comprison Chart."

Obviously, I couldn't compare prices at every wine shop. Your own favorite might not be in the article. Please let me know if you think I missed a low price leader, but tell me if you have compared its prices to Chicago Lake Liquors or Hennepin Lake Liquor, two low-priced leaders. A colleague asked how I could have left out Morelli's, which, he said, has the lowest prices in the city. He might be right if he's talking about St. Paul, but when I compared Morelli's prices to Hennepin Lake and Chicago Lake in Minneapolis, Morelli's was slightly higher on each one.

Here are Morelli's prices on five of the seven wines in my price comparison, which I checked Saturday, Aug. 14. The Beringer Knights Valley Cab and the Yellow Tail Shiraz (750 ml) were not available at Morelli's.

Kendall Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay $10.77
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio $19.99
Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc $12.99
Beringer White Zinfandel $5.49
Cavit Pinot Grigio $10.88.

And what about Costco and Sam's Club liquor stores? How much cheaper are the warehouse clubs?

Surprising answer.

Of the seven wines, I could only find two that were stocked at either Costco or Sam's Club. I found the Kendall Jackson Vintner's Reserve Chardonnay at Sam's Club in Bloomington for $10.58. Both Chicago Lake and Hennepin Lake sell it for $9.99. Costco in St. Louis Park sells the Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio for $17.95. It's only $15.99 at Chicago Lake.

The benefit of my Costco/Sam's Club memberships feels somewhat de-valued after my price comparison, but non-members can buy at either liquor store too.
