YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
Music and fashion run on the same pop-culture current, and both provide the charge for Voltage: Fashion Amplified -- arguably the most influential local runway show of the year.
Designer, Kevin Kramp.
With 10 designers and five bands on the roster, it's got a lot of wattage behind it. Meet five of the designers.
KEVIN KRAMP, WINONA
The look: Luxury men's knitwear in edgy silhouettes. "I push shapes and proportions to new areas, with unexpected constructions and surprise volumes. I can't help but gravitate to more pattern, more color, more shape, more, more, more. All to satisfy my cuckoo tendencies of beauty," he said.
Voltage collection: "Based on my idea of a globally nomadic tribe of free-thinking, creative, intelligent and ruggedly elegant men of all ages who explore this discouraging world seeking small moments of beauty and joy," he said.
Day job: Men's Knitwear and Collection designer at St. Croix Collections.
Background: Kramp received a visual art and Italian studies degree from Brown University in Rhode Island. He attended Pratt Institute in New York, and then graduated with a second degree in fashion design with knitwear from Central St. Martins in London.
Next up: A fall 2010 men's knitwear collection, which will include a gallery exhibition at the Textile Center in September.
Where to shop: Knit tops ($250 to $460) and larger pieces ($375 to $650), available through www.kevinkramp.com.
EMMA BERG, MINNEAPOLIS
The look: Well known in the art scene, Berg will close the show with her collection. Fabrics include silk and organza digitally- or screen-printed with the work of local artist Ruben Nusz. "I want to make the 'statement garments' that a woman hangs in her closet like a trophy, always keeping and always remembering the first time she wore it," she said.
Voltage collection: Loosely based on "Auntie Mame." "I am trying to capture that energy of a woman with a confident yet welcoming disposition," she said.
Background: Originally from Stacy, Minn., Berg started sewing with her mother. Her foray into the fashion scene is relatively new, but logical. "Simply, I love playing dress-up," she said.
Day jobs: HR data management at Target, director of mplsart.com and curator for exhibits at Rogue Buddha Gallery and Fox Tax Gallery.
Influences: "My favorite pieces to study the movement and cut of are from Alber Elbaz for Lanvin," she said.
Where to shop: Tops ($90 and up) and custom work, available at Design Collective (1311 W. 26th St., Mpls., 612-377-1000). See www.emmaberg.com for more information.
GEORGE MOSKAL, ST. PAUL
The look: Moskal, featured in 2007 and 2008 Voltage shows, has a flair for elegance and feminine silhouettes.
Voltage collection: "I really wanted to look forward and not behind. I started with the cloth and draped it on a form to see what silhouettes I could design without referencing any specific theme," he said.
Background: He grew up in Prairie Farm, Wis., where the countryside's water, woods and cemetery have had a lasting impact. His early projects involved hand-sewing dresses for his sister's dolls. While earning a degree in apparel design from the University of Wisconsin, Stout, he studied in London, where he freelanced with Zandra Rhodes.
Influences: Vionnet. "She invented the bias cut and was the master of draping," he said.
Where to shop: Tops ($100-$150), skirts (about $150) and dresses ($250 to $350), available at Cliché (2403 S. Lyndale Av. S., Mpls., 612-870-0420) and Houndstooth (5749 Egan Dr., Savage, 952-440-2807). Custom orders available at www.georgemoskal.com.
PAFOUA THAO OF PFT COUTURE, ST. PAUL
The look: Effortless beauty is PFT Couture's signature. Flowing silk charmeuse in impressionistic prints with obis give feminine silhouettes in comfortable dresses.
Voltage collection: Her theme is "Watercolors." "I wanted to feature bold, artful prints in a stylish and wearable way," she said.
Background: When she was 5 years old, her family migrated to the Twin Cities from Laos. She has always sketched dresses. "Maybe in the past life I was a designer?" she said. With a degree in fashion design and patternmaking from Mount Mary College in Milwaukee, Wis., she works full-time on her label.
Influences: "The late Alexander McQueen, for his bizarre yet intriguingly beautiful concepts; Valentino, for his incredible sense of grace and femininity; and Christian Dior, for defining opulence," she said.
Where to shop: Obi belts ($45), silk dresses with obis ($250 to $300), available at Belle Reve Boutique (320 E. Hennepin Av., Mpls., 612-333-3148). Custom orders available through www.pftcouture.com.
DANIELLE EVERINE, MINNEAPOLIS
The look: Menswear takes feminine form as Everine explores "the dichotomies of masculinity and femininity, strength and vulnerability, structure and delicacy," she said.
Voltage collection: "These garments pair fine and rugged textiles with dainty chiffons, inspired by the turn-of-the-[20th]-century leisured class. From equestrian wear to lace collars, this collection pursues a look that is as much sophisticated as it is alley cat," she said.
Background: At a young age, the Golden Valley native was unhappy with what she found at the mall, so she taught herself to sew. Early on, she altered store-bought patterns to achieve the effect she wanted. After a short stint at American Intercontinental University in London, she completed a bachelor's degree in fine art (exploring the art of fashion) at the University of Minnesota.
Influences: The illustrator Erte, Alexander McQueen and Rodarte's most recent collection.
Where to shop: Blouses ($100 to $110) and wide-leg trousers ($130), available at Cliché. See www.DanielleEverine.com.
